Motorola started working on a portable cellular phone in 1973. They first began marketing this huge thing in 1983. However, since he’s inside and not driving around, this might have just been an early cordless phone. The Motorola DynaTAC cost $4000 and weighed just about two pounds.

Nokia had their version of a mobile phone in 1982. For people who had seen combat, this thing looked like two-way radio communications gear from the Vietnam War or something. For everybody else, it looked like a little boom box with a phone stuck on top. These phones would not fit in a pocket nor would they be practical to carry around on one’s shoulder. Mobile phones that looked more like regular phones started showing up in the early 1990s. Motorola came up with a cutie in 1996, a starTAC. This mobile phone really looks a lot like what we are finishing with right now. It folded over in the middle. Different styles evolved over the years to temp consumers to buy the latest looking model. Picture taking has not been the same since the evolution of mobile phones with digital picture taking capabilities.

With the iPhone, Blackberries, and others on the market, the mobile phone is now morphing into something bigger, becoming PDA, phones, and pads. An increase in functionality has created a need to make the newer phones larger than the ones ten years ago.
